Day 4099 - Naasa: Dya

We performed our first ‘Naasa: Dya’ puja last Sunday before starting our weekly Dhime classes. We had received 5 brand new Dhimes from Nepal and it was only right to perform puja before we started playing them.

‘Naasa:’ means Grace and ‘Dya’ means Deity. Naasa: Dya is regarded as Master of Arts, skills and craft. It is also regarded as the deity of personality and character. In Newah community it is mandatory to visit and worship Naasa: Dya before learning any skills may it be arts, musics, dances or crafts.

Sometimes Naasa Dya is also potrayed as Natyaswora(Shiva) and Saraswati of Hinduism. However, while there may be overlaps in themes of music and art between Naasa Dya and deities like Saraswati and Natyaswora, Naasa: Dya has a distinct identity deeply rooted in Newah Culture, often disconnected from broader Hindu representation.

Naasa Dya is is often represented by holes in the wall of shrines or in homes, as single kr sets of three. These holes can be of various shapes, sometimes as triangles.

Here, I share the video of Jaya Nakarmi performing Naasa Dya and Dhime Puja and a picture of Naasa Dya that I found on the internet.
