Day 4029: Manda

Manda—a sacred geometric diagram that holds deep cultural, spiritual, and artistic significance in Newah tradition. For me, however, the ritual of making Manda is much more than a tradition; it is a meditative process, a moment to connect with my roots, bond with my family, and reflect on life’s blessings. It’s not just a ritual; it is a celebration of life, heritage, and artistry.

Every year, During Mha Puja, I vehemently enjoy the entire process of making the Manda: carefully placing each element with intention, performing Mha Puja in front of it, and, finally, the symbolic act of destroying this intricate work of art that we have spent so much time and effort creating. This act, though seemingly paradoxical, holds profound meaning—it reminds us of the impermanence of life, the beauty of fleeting moments, and the importance of renewal.

The Manda, created with ingredients like Maaye (black lentils), Haaku Musya (black soybeans), Taaye (husked rice), Baji (flattened rice), Sinha (vermilion powder), Guna Swan (marigold petals), Waa(paddy), Ka: nee (maize), Ta; Chhwo (barley), Chho (wheat), Haamo (sesame seeds) etc symbolizes abundance, protection, and cosmic harmony. Its creation is not just an art—it’s a spiritual practice to celebrate togetherness and gratitude

Day 4027: 24 years and running strong

Through 24 years of experience, we, Pasa Puchah Guthi, UK, have learned that the continuation of tradition is the key, not preserving it in its ancient form, and it is only possible when we evolve with time. Along this journey, we have initiated many milestones, embraced mistakes, and risen stronger from challenges. We’ve faced criticism and adversities, but with resilience, openness, and inclusivity, we’ve grown together and stronger. By listening to new ideas and valuing feedback, we have redefined what it means to celebrate our heritage in a modern context.

So, On 9 November 2024, PASA PUCHAH GUTHI, UK - (London) celebrated the 24th Nhu Dan (Nepal Sambat 1145) with a fresh perspective. For the first time, we introduced food stalls including MoMos and Chowmein, featured our very own Dhime players, experimented with new seating arrangements, and proudly showcased our London Lakhey. This year, we focused on capturing the essence of the new year celebration rather than following the traditional Mha Puja format.

We also had the honor of felicitating our patron, Prof. David N. Gellner, on his recent retirement, recognizing his contributions to PPGUK, Newah Community and inspiring many Newah youth all over the world.

A truly inclusive, progressive, and joyous event—here’s to many more celebrations of our rich heritage!

Extremely thankful to our founder members Shashidhar Manandhar Sthapit Amrit Ratna Dharma Shakya Balmukund Joshi Uttam G Amatya Arjun Pradhan Mahanta Shrestha
