Day 3168: Ojaswi’s 5th Birthday Letter!
Dear Sweet Girl,
You turned five years old this year. This is your second birthday during pandemic. It just seems like yesterday, we celebrated your fourth birthday at Nilesh Kaka and Kasia Kaki’s garden.
This 5th birthday you wanted to do so many things. First one was to stop sucking your thumb.
You wanted to have a sleep over with your friends and unicorn themed party. We invited Aditi, Riya, Adishree and Shanaya for the sleepover and the rest of the kids from our ‘West London Family’ the next day for a party. We coloured party gift bags and unicorn masks. We hunted easter eggs and played ‘Floor is Lava’ and ‘What’s in the Box' and had lots of pizza.
Sweet girl, you live out the meaning of your name: Luminescence (Ojaswi) – Giving out light without any heat, illuminating everywhere you go. When you walk into a room and talk to someone new, you bring a smile to their face.
You are compassionate. If someone is hurt, you want them to feel better. If someone is sad, you want them to feel happy. I love your heart for people. For me, when you say ‘I love you’, it just takes away all the grief in the world.
You keep on surprising me with the ability to remember the lyrics of the song and the way you enjoy singing. I'm impressed when you belt out songs like Sunflower, Driver’s license, Shotgun and even Savage Love and say they are your favourite songs. I always have to google lyrics of these songs to check if they contain any rude words – Nothing I want to do to stop you sing, though.
You love doing silly dances and making silly faces – you like climbing on to me and your favourite version of gymnastics is being held upside down, being thrown up in the air by me or just climbing to the top of my head.
You show bravery in doing things; riding a bike, jumping from heights, scooting off fast, climbing frames or just wandering off without any supervision. And other times you show us your fragile and fearful side - worried with the miniscule cut on your finger, freaking out about a tiny fly looking thing in your vicinity.
Every day, you surprise me, amuse me, frustrate me and impress me, and just occasionally drive me to despair - when we're both short on tolerance and patience, reminding me - unwittingly - that you are still just a little girl, when you're overtired, whining and collapsing in a heap of tears for the most absurd and ridiculous reasons.
You can entertain yourself for hours with imaginative roleplay games which you often involve us in (I admit I'm not always fully committed to the game or following the plot very closely). You can be surprisingly bossy when playing games. It’s always your way or your way! No wonder you like calling yourself Queen and hate being called princess.
I know you're not at all like this at school. There you're quiet and shy, only just beginning to come out of your shell and make friends. When you get to school, at least three boys come to talk to you and try to get your attention with flowers or toys they have sneaked in. And, you seem to enjoy their attention, your mum is slightly concerned but I find it funny.
Lastly, there will be challenges over the next few years. You will find that not everyone is nice. There will be other kids who will be mean and try and tell you things which aren’t true. But I will be here for you. And so will your mum. We will not be able to keep you from the sadness in the world, but we will help you learn to cope with it and you won’t have to face it alone. You will grow into a powerful girl, one who will grow to create her own world and live happily, no matter what.
My beautiful girl, we love you just as you are, and always will. Through thick and thin, good times and bad times, we will always love you - whatever, whoever, wherever you are, I hope you know that.
Love,
Daddy Pig
