Day 2810: Pataal Lok - Web-series Review

I made my mind up to watch this series when the first promotion for Pataal Lok appeared in my newsfeed from Anushka Sharma. I also thought, it must be good as Anushka decided to do the Series.

So, the first episode of Pataal Lok I spent waiting for an extravagant entry of heroine. Which never happened. However, it ended with the realization that the whole series will be headed by a down and out police inspector Haathi Raam Chaudhari played by Jaideep Alahwat and Anushka Sharma was an executive Producer. The pace of 1st episode also made me question if this really is a series that I will be spending next 10 hours of my life watching? I just decided to give second episode a chance.

Thankfully, second episode was much more mature (and my expectation had settled). From here on the series catches its pace, where it reveals more characters and the territories its story is going to be told in; drawing parallels between the cushy world of English-speaking, pub-trawling, bed-hopping media types, and the foul-mouthed cops, colourful consorts, convicts: hell is everywhere – Paataal Lok is here.

The story of Pataal lok is about the low-profile Police Inspector Haathi Raam, who lands an unexpected high-profile case of four convicts who are arrested while on the way to kill celebrity anchor Sanjeev Mehra. Haathi Raam is paired with rookie Ansari. This is a classic hard-boiled, experienced senior showing the ropes to a wide-eyed junior which form more than a trope.

Haathi Ram is flawed, vulnerable, stubborn, strong and instinctive; all at the same time. But what he is not is a super-macho-all-action-policeman. In his mission to uncover the truth behind the convicts and to prove himself in the only high-profile case of his career, Haathi Raam discovers various colors of Pataal Lok; caste, politics, violence, corruption and power-play at all levels, whether it is in tony South Delhi or in dust-ridden rural areas of india: some of the most powerful parts of Pataal Lok are set in rural Punjab, and Chitrakoot.

Pataal look also consists of several other little stories, like Haathi Ram’s family issues, Ansari’s religion and discrimination, Sexual harassment of LGBTI Celebrity’s Media and lies rotating around opportunities, politics, power, mental health, revenge, infidelity, lust and judgements. Finally, untangling all the mysteries and love for dogs.

Jaideep Alahwat as an ordinary Police inspector is not only convincing but in his first prominent role as an actor comes out as a winner after being overshadowed by Nawazuddin Siddiqui in Gangs Of Wassepur.

All other actors have done justice to their characters. Neeraj Kabi as the journalist Sanjeev Mehra, Niharika Dutt as his love interest, Gul Panag as Hathi Raam’s wife and all others have given their characters real life.

All in all, Pataal Lok is an excellently made series which keeps you guessing and at the edge for entire 10 episodes. The timing of introduction of new characters and the sequence of the story is immaculate. A must watch!
